Inspiration Behind This Piece:

I created this drawing in 2020, and it remains one of my favorites. It was inspired by the pressure women face to conform to society’s unrealistic beauty standards, often represented by figures like Barbie. Growing up, being compared to a Barbie doll was seen as the ultimate compliment—it meant you had the "ideal" body, flawless hair, and perfect features. But striving for this kind of "perfection" can be detrimental to mental health and deeply affect self-worth.

In this piece, the skeleton holding the Barbie head represents putting on a "perfect" mask to seek validation. The skeleton is sad, symbolizing how the pursuit of societal perfection can rob you of happiness, leaving behind pain, mental struggles, and exhaustion from constantly trying to meet impossible expectations.

This artwork is a reminder that you don’t need to destroy yourself chasing "perfection." True beauty comes from embracing your unique qualities and being proud of who you are, not trying to fit into a mold. And just because someone looks "perfect" on the outside doesn’t mean they aren’t struggling on the inside. I hope this piece helps to encourage you to reject harmful beauty standards and remember that perfection is an illusion. Your words and kindness carry weight — so be gentle with yourself and others, and always be careful with what kind of "compliments" you are giving to others.
